With images like this repeated all over the land, its no wonder we are tired of the snow. We have had several calls and emails from clients concerned about snow and its effect on their plants.
Snow actually acts as an insulator and as such, provided it’s short lived, is not really a problem. It is frost and ice which will be of more concern.
Only time and a reasonably quick return to normal seasonal temperatures will tell us what damage has been done.
There will definately be some delicate plants lost but others will survive and revive in Spring.
Its hard to remember last autumn and winter. After a very wet October, we had fierce air and ground frosts for most of November and December followed by a blanket of snow and ice in January. It was well into March 2010 before winter really loosened its grip.
Even with those harsh conditions most plants survived and some even thrived. Some cordylines and tropical palms which looked dead and withered had sprouted new growth by September.
This picture shows olive trees with an uncharacteristic covering of snow. In some areas last winter, olives and other evergreen trees lost all their leaves. It was only in Spring that new growth sprouted strong healthy shoots. Do not despair.
