quick revamp of neglected areas

October 20th, 2011

For us there really is nothing worse than a neglected or empty planting space.

This space was created as part of a dining room extension. There is another raised planter to match this one on the other side of the steps. The original intention was to create a statement entry into the long narrow garden.

We were called to give these two beds some suitable plant appeal.

Planting a 3.3M tall Italian Cypress tree at the outer edge of each bed creates a gateway / pillar effect. Under planting with a mixture of lavender, rosemary and china blue agapanthus allows a carpet of scent and colour to fill the base.

At night these trees are subtly underlit to add interest.

A very contemporary dining room looks out onto a neglected and untidy water feature.

Now tidied and replanted this water feature is no longer an eyesore.

This is one of the saddest looking planting beds at a front door we had seen in ages. One dead palm and a straggly bunch of sticks with weeds for company. Hardly a welcome note.

Once we got to work, it was not long till it looked smart and elegant. Rapidly becoming another of our signature plants the Italian Cypress sets the right tone here.

Dark green glossy ferns and small evergreen hebe will carpet the circle. In June tall flowering crocosmia will erupt from the centre.

Sometimes it takes just a little imagination to make a huge difference to the appearance of a garden or planting space.
