planting for year one

May 17th, 2011

Once the ground had been prepared and all weeds removed we set to with plantscaping this communal garden .

A pallete of plants including hot pink and purple flowering penstemon is contrasted against dainty soft white carpet roses. China blue agapanthus and tall grasses add height and colour while crocosmia Lucifer and fuchsia Tom Thumb add shots of vibrant red.

A statue of St Joseph represents a link to teaching. With the ugly hoarding removed the site seems much less sloped and flows seemlessly into the background.

Benefiting from a couple of mature cherry trees and a well maintained hedge this garden is given an instant setting and a feeling of enclosure. Here ferns and roses sit amongst the granite rocks. These rocks have been placed deliberately. They will be softened once all plants have had a chance to grow and naturally form around them.

Flowering heads of agapanthus seem to race across the slope while delicate delphinium and scented lavender add acents of interest.

In contrast to the riot of hot colour elsewhere, this area beside a sweeping driveway is treated to a monochrome mix of green and white architectural planting. Phormium and virburnum sit alongside tall white agapanthus. Evergreen holly is planted to form a dense screen behind. In contrast to all this, a stand of Photinia adds depth and a splash of red to warm the tones.

Next posting will show what this garden looks like one year on.
