New build housing estates, with wide open front gardens, might look great on paper and may well work for a short while, but in realityall they do is present an easy short cut for door to door salesmen and junk mailers.
Tired of a path being worn in their lawn, this homeowner asked us to provide a low maintenance blocking option using evergreen plants. There was also a serious dandelion infestation.
We agreed a middle line with the next door neighbours and created a planting trench. As topsoil is a rare comodity in most new estates, we dug in a sufficient quantity to help this hedge along.
In this picture (above) the lovely glossy green leaves of laurus nobilis stand upright and regimented. A weed-kill treatment has seen off the dandelion infestation.
We created a deep planting space under the windows – even more of a deterrent for casual walkers and a softer frame to the house. Into this we planted a mixture of low growing shrubs and flowering plants.
This picture (above) shows dainty pink flowering leptospermum and miniature white flowering hebe, planted in deep bark mulch.
Our fix -it seems to work; no more reported short cuts through this garden and it looks great too.
