Limited space and with views of not the most impressive kind, this central courtyard was cramped and uninviting.
Recently renovated this house now has a central area which is a focal point for three wrap around rooms. It really needs to earn its keep.
Above shows the view from the main living area. Where – ever you are in this open plan house, the only outside view is of sheds and roof tiles!
We were comissioned to screen off the ugly buildings and provide a growing space for salad crops.
We immediately suggested a wooden strucure as we felt it would soften the space. We also noted that it would need to be free standing and portable as there is a crawl space to the left of the patio. The fence needed to be secure and aestethic. And floor space was at a minimum!
This structure is created in such a way that it takes up as little floor space as possible. We used new sleepers to the front and marine plywood to the back. This has allowed us to create a planter which doubles up as extra seating.
Now planted with rocket and tomato seeds this planter box will produce plenty of salads for summer months.
The olive trees offer a lovely sense of maturity and move gently in the breeze. Easy to keep, their silvery tones work beautifully in this surrounding.
Close – gap bespoke fencing ensures enough light and air gets in while masking ugly views beyond.
This courtyard has been smartened up using a very sensible approach. We have created a space which feels like an addition to the house and it seemlessly blends into the architecture.
