metropolitan monochrome

January 25th, 2011

Silver, slate, charcoal, pewter and ash, all of these are shades of grey. Having spent years in the home design wilderness, grey, in all it’s wonderous hues, has re surfaced as a big hitter in interiors. In this room we went all out to celebrate its triumphal return!

Here is the room our client was living with.

No matter what they did – it always felt like a corridor.

With contrasting colours the feeling of enclosure was exagerated. It took a bit of convincing to get them to believe we would turn this corridor room into a living space which would be glamorous, cosy, ultra luxurious and most importantly we were using grey and aubergine to do it!

We strarted by bumping up the heating and making the room cosy with extra thick underlay, re insulated walls and interlined curtains. Next we removed the blinds and flooded the room with light.

This room is the result of clever design choices and careful attention to detail. The room is transformed and is bursting with character and flair.

While grey is great it really needs a strong accent colour. Here we chose dark plum. Adding a central coffee table and well thought out placement of other furniture, the room now has a function and a feeling of being  inviting.

All fabrics used have a texture. There is heavy velvet and soft silk, shiny satin and embroidered tweed. Two lamp tables add a dash of Boutique Hotel chic. Black and white images of Dublin adorn the walls.
