classic front garden for period house

June 21st, 2011

The front garden of a classic Edwardian redbrick house in Dublin.  The garden is unloved, bland,  and a bit of a mess.  Dominated by the 3 bins it does nothing to enhance the front of this recently renovated house.

Classic or period homes benefit from gardens with structure and balance to compliment the more classic proportions and style of the facade.

The clients have a plan for this garden which provides a space at the front to hide the wheelie bins.  However it would have left the bins very near the front path and would also mean that they are difficult to get in and out.  We amended the plan slightly: putting the pins over to the left hand side out of sight and increasing the planting space at the front railings.

The clients like this amended version so last week we go to work.

First the all the site needed to made completely weed free and levelled for the central gravel area.

Then we installed the central gravel area bordered by light buff granite.

This buff granite reflects light in this rather shady garden and opens up the centre space.

The we got to planting on a very showery June day!  We covered the gravel area with plastic to protect it.  But that didn’t stop the mud getting everywhere else.  But a hosing down at the end of the day will clean it all up.

In the next post we’ll show the finished garden.  We are pleased with the result!
